Mumbai-Based NGO Receives UN SDG Action Solidarity Award

Project Mumbai, a not for profit organisation engaged in making Mumbai a better city received the United Nations SDG Action Solidarity Award 2020 for stepping in to address the healthcare and grocery needs of the home quarantined by delivering medical supplies and groceries through a doorstep service. Shishir Joshi, CEO and founder of Project Mumbai, is among the 50 recipients chosen globally for this honour. In 50 awardees, three are from India and Project Mumbai is one of them.

Project Mumbai a 20-month-old NGO strongly believes that a society can grow, get nurtured, and become mature if people feel a sense of ownership towards the place and community they are part of. With effective communication and leadership, flexible volunteering hours, the NGO launched three helplines for providing medicines, groceries and other essential items to senior citizens and the people with disabilities living alone in the city.

They contributed over 2 lakh PPE kits to doctors and 2 lakh masks to Mumbai Police and provided cooked meals to 45 lakh citizens, homeless and migrants across Mumbai, besides providing grocery kits to over 20,000 families. India has played an important role in shaping the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the time of crisis NGO’s like Project Mumbai have been seen as a game-changer.

Marina Ponti, Global Director of United Nations SDG Action Campaign, said, “We need hope, we need solidarity, and we need creative and coordinated action on the goals. Amid the global health crisis, we see strong examples of solidarity among people everywhere. We congratulate Project Mumbai for their solidarity and determination to improve others’ lives, inspire resilience, and lift hopes in the face of this crisis.”

Shishir Joshi, CEO and founder of Project Mumbai said, “Project Mumbai is founded on the principles of volunteerism. Its support and outreach platform is built on a strong sense of ownership of our city.” He further added “We at Project Mumbai believe strongly and say- Mumbai Ke Liye Kuchh Bhi Karega (Will do anything for Mumbai). This recognition by the United Nations honours the spirit of every individual who has contributed to our fight against COVID-19.”
