Parle-G reached a milestone during the Covid-19 pandemic. The household brand, also known as the common man’s biscuit for decades, sold the maximum number of biscuits during the lockdown. Mayank Shah, category head at Parle Products said that while the company cannot disclose sales figures, it has been the highest in eight decades, with Parle biscuits now holding a market share of 32% in India’s biscuits segment. “Parle has grown highest among all companies, even the large ones with over Rs 1,000 crore turnovers,” he added.

According to reports, the unprecedented sale of biscuits during the COVID-19 lockdown phase went up massively in the country as people stacked up on easy and simple essential food items. As millions of migrant workers were commuting to their homes, these biscuits were bought in large quantities by governments, NGOs and others to distribute among them.

Shah has been quoted saying, “During the lockdown, Parle-G became the comfort food for the common man and for several others, it was the only food they had. This is a common man’s biscuit; people who cannot afford bread – buy Parle-G.” That is the kind of trust, which the people have in the brand, he said adding the Parle-G is good for storing also as it has a longer shelf life. The company had also announced to donate three crore packs of Parle-G biscuits when the coronavirus pandemic intensified in India. Parle Products makes their biscuits in 130 factories across the country out of which 120 are contract manufacturing units.
